Talk - "A New View of India : A New Chance for Indian Products" by Prof. Jan Katz
Date - 15 th February, 17 th February and 20 th February 2006
Venue - Nehru Center , Mumbai, Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan, Bangalore , AIMA Auditorium Delhi

At Nehru Center, Mumbai, Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan, Bangalore and AIMA Auditorium New Delhi Prof. Jan Katz, Suter-Staley Director of Global Business, Johnson Graduate School of Management, Senior Lecturer in International Business & Marketing, Cornell University, New York, gave a talk on "A New View of India: A New Chance for Indian Products."

Professor Katz a scholar of International Marketing enlightened the audience regarding the perception about Indians, Indian products, products positioning, marketing and strategies to promote the brand India . Katz emphasized on the need for development of Indian brand like some South American and Chinese brands.

Katz suggested three strategies for brand establishment. The first strategy is slow and low cost. She gave example of Goya, a South American packaged-food company that started from New York catering to the needs of immigrant Mexicans and slowly consolidated its position expanding into supermarkets across North America .

The second strategy Katz exemplified was high cost and fast. She gave example of Corona Brewer from Puerto Rico . This very ordinary beer was placed in premier price position and to give advantage of ethnic segment lime was used to suggest local flavor.

The third strategy Katz suggested was using strategic alliances with small players. She was of the opinion that few small players can make it big together. Katz also elaborated the points that India can use to its advantage.

Katz said that India could focus on consumer products, health care, culture and later on mainstream products emphasizing on the potential for Indian products that require serious consideration. She also praised Indian democracy and hoped for success of brand India that is towering the global market.

Finally Katz concluded by saying, "today's business world is connected on both a personal and global scale. Those who will thrive-who will make a real impact in the short and long term-are defined by the ability to envision success, marshal a broad range of resources, drive collaborative effort and deliver breakthrough results and that is the need of the hour and marching countries like India and China have learned them and are progressing."
